Polyvagal Theory in Plain English: The 3 Nervous System States and How to Shift

The three states, in plain language

Polyvagal theory describes three main nervous system states that you move between all day, guided by cues of safety or threat. None of them is bad. They are all protective. The goal is not to live in one state forever, but to move flexibly and to find your way back to calm.

1. Ventral vagal: safe and connected

This is the calm, grounded state. You feel present, open to other people, and able to think clearly. Your breathing is easy and your shoulders are soft. This is home base, the state supportive care is trying to help you return to.

2. Sympathetic: fight or flight

When your body reads threat, the sympathetic branch fires. You feel wired, anxious, irritable, or restless. Your heart speeds up and your muscles tense. This is the 3am racing mind and the short fuse. It is mobilization energy, useful in a real emergency and exhausting when it will not switch off.

3. Dorsal vagal: shutdown

When threat feels like too much for too long, the oldest branch of the vagus nerve pulls you into shutdown. You feel numb, flat, foggy, heavy, or disconnected. This is not laziness. It is the nervous system conserving energy when it has decided that mobilizing is not safe.

What are the three states in polyvagal theory?

Polyvagal theory describes three nervous system states: ventral vagal (safe, calm, and connected), sympathetic (fight or flight, wired and anxious), and dorsal vagal (shutdown, numb, or flat). Your body moves between them all day based on cues of safety or threat.


How to shift toward calm

You do not shift states by thinking harder. You shift by giving your body a physical cue of safety. The vagus nerve listens to breath, temperature, and touch far more readily than it listens to logic.

  • Lengthen the exhale. A slow exhale that is longer than the inhale nudges the vagus nerve toward the calmer state. Try breathing in for four and out for six.
  • Add gentle, even weight. Deep pressure across the shoulders or chest is a steady signal of safety. A wearable weighted wrap gives your body that cue without asking anything of your mind.
  • Use warmth or cool. Warmth soothes a wired body; cool can help a foggy, shut-down one feel more present. Temperature is a fast, physical input.

Why naming the state helps
