Heating & Safety Guide

Every Parker Mountain Comfort Wraps piece is filled with whole flaxseed and dried herbs, which hold warmth beautifully. That same quality means a wrap can get hotter than it feels at first touch, so please take one extra minute with these steps. I want your comfort to be safe comfort.

Microwave heating times

Find your microwave's wattage on the label inside the door or on the back. Always start at the low end of the range. You can add more time; you cannot take it away.

Piece 700 to 900 watts 1000 to 1100 watts 1200 watts or more Extra steps
Eye Pillow about 40 sec about 30 sec about 25 sec 10 sec
Heart of Hope 25 to 35 sec 20 to 30 sec 15 to 25 sec 10 sec

Body Wrap 2 to 2½ min 1½ to 2 min 1¼ to 1¾ min 30 sec
5 lb Deluxe Wrap 2½ to 3 min 2 to 2½ min 1¾ to 2¼ min 30 sec
Fidgets Never microwave. Glass marbles inside. Oven only: 250°F on a cookie sheet for 1 to 2 minutes.
Little Comforts Please do not heat for a child. Use at room temperature or lightly chilled.

Every time you heat it

  • Stay with it. Never leave a wrap in the microwave unattended, and never run it longer than the time above.
  • Knead and wait. Flaxseed can hold hot spots. Knead the piece to spread the heat and let it rest for a minute.
  • Test on the inside of your wrist. It should feel comfortably warm, never hot. If it is too warm, let it cool before use.
  • Let it cool completely before heating it again. Reheating a warm wrap is how most overheating happens.
  • Keep it dry. Water damages the flaxseed fill and can make it heat unevenly.
  • If it ever smells scorched, or the fabric looks browned, stop using it and email me. Under our Make It Right Promise, I will replace it.

Who should not use heat

Warmth should feel good. These are times when it is safer to use your wrap at room temperature, or to ask your doctor first:

  • Anyone who cannot feel heat well, including people with diabetes, nerve damage or neuropathy, poor circulation, numbness, or recent surgery. Burns from heated wheat and flax bags happen most often to people who could not feel the heat building.
  • While sleeping. Do not fall asleep with a heated wrap on your body.
  • Babies and young children. Never place any weighted product on an infant, and do not heat wraps for children.
  • Broken, irritated, or swollen skin, or areas that are already inflamed.

Using it cold

Seal your piece in a plastic bag and place it in the freezer for about an hour. Use a thin cloth between a frozen piece and bare skin, and use it for up to 20 minutes at a time. The same people who should avoid heat should also take care with cold.

How long do you microwave a flaxseed wrap?

Heating time depends on the size of the wrap and the wattage of your microwave. For a 3 pound Parker Mountain Comfort Wraps Body Wrap or Neck Pillow in a 1000 to 1100 watt microwave, start with 1½ minutes and add 30 second steps only if needed, up to 2 minutes. Always knead it, test it on the inside of your wrist, and let it cool completely before reheating.

Questions

If anything about heating your piece feels unclear, email me at jessica.leff@pmcomfortwraps.com. I would always rather answer a question than have someone guess.

Why we take this seriously: Medical studies of microwaved wheat and grain bags have found that they can reach temperatures high enough to cause deep burns, especially with reheating and in people with reduced sensation (Collins et al., Eplasty, 2011; Kornhaber et al., Wounds, 2020). The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has also warned against weighted products for infants (2024).
